A great competition before the PAN AMERICAN GAMES

Balneário Camboriú one of the most pleasant cities of Santa Catarina will welcome America’s most important race walking athletes on April 21st and 22nd during the 13th CAIXA Pan American Cup when more than one hundred participants are expected.

Athletes as the 1996 Olympic 20km champion Jefferson Perez(ECU) and his team colleague Rolando Saquipay will lead the list of stars in the event that will also have strong representatives from Mexico, Colombia and Guatemala.

The Pan Am Cup will be the last competition to be considered for the selection of the Brazilian representatives of the 50km race at the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil will select to Rio the two best ranked athletes of the national list in the event in the period of January  1st, 2006 to April 22nd, 2007.

By the way, Brazil will be represented at Balneario Camboriú by its Pan American Games pre-selected athletes, such as: Santa Catarina born Sergio Galdino, National 20km and 50km record holder; Mário Jose dos Santos Júnior, 2003 Santo Domingo  Pan American Games 50km silver medallist; Moacir Zimmermann from Santa Catarina; Cláudio Richardson from Rio Grande do Norte; Cisiane Dutra Lopes, from Pernambuco and the athletes from Parana who live in Santa Catarina Alessandra Picagevicz and Tânia Spindler.

Both in the men’s and women’s 20km, the Pan-American Cup will be a great opportunity for the Brazilian athletes to obtain a good result in order to reach the top ranking positions. The reason is that the country representatives in the Pan American Games will be the Brazilian Trophy champion and the top ranked athlete on June 24.

The 13th  CAIXA Pan American Race Walking Cup will be organized by the Brazilian Athletics Federation, co-organized by the Santa Catarina Athletics Federation, with support of Balneário Camboriú’s Sports Secretary and the Caixa Econômica Federal bank sponsorship.
